BAR TRAVELER - Oregon

Come along for the ride as we visit a brew pub in a small town along the Oregon Coast.

This little trip was inspired by an Esquire article (Drivin’ and Eatin’: Oregon’s Route 101, June 2004) we read when the chill of Kansas City’s winter had barely thawed. It set our imaginations to the warmth of summer in the Pacific Northwest and escape from the harsh extremes of negative wind chills and the frozen streets of our favorite Cowtown.

Our trip began in Portland, then headed south to the amazing wineries of the Willamette Valley. After spending the night at King Estate in their private ranch house, we made our way over to Highway 101 snaking its way up the western coast. With our bellies full of wine and the prospect of bountiful fresh seafood, we narrowed our plethora of choices down to finding the best clam chowder.

As we drove from Florence all the way up to Cannon Beach (where they filmed The Goonies and Point Break, God bless Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves), we stopped every couple of towns to taste the gruel, drink the grog and hang out with the sea lions. Each restaurant had its own version of chowder and the ones Esquire had recommended were only average, so we strayed from their list and went to investigate some places of our own.

Our greatest discovery was the Rogue Ales Public House in Newport, also known as the Bay Pub. The chowder was great, worthy of a top position on our personal list, but what really made the place memorable was Charlie the bartender/general manager and of course, the beer. I’d tasted Rogue beer before, in Florida of all places, and had no idea that it was from Oregon. They had over 20 beers available on tap and Charlie helped us find the one that suited each of us best by pouring little samples of any one we liked. Being a stout man, I tried their Russian Imperial Stout, rumored to be the darkest in the world, but their Shakespeare Stout was the one that hit the spot.

Behind the bar was a unique Rogue bottle with the likeness of Marge and Homer Simpson getting married, but with different names. Charlie said it was one of their personalized bottles that people get made up for special occasions. You have to purchase them by the case, but it is a one-of-a-kind memento that really makes an impression. Definitely made us want to order a case, the next time we got married!
As we sat there, in walked a pack of laughing hyenas wearing leis. Charlie greeted them in recognition and they responded by saying “Do we get free beer now? We couldn’t find shirts but we all got LEI’D for you!” Although shirtless (we didn’t say topless!), Charlie was a good sport and served up three of their favorite brews. We asked what that was all about and he explained that if you come in wearing a Hawaiian shirt, the first round is on the house! We vowed to wear such shirts the next time. Remember: it’s always a good idea to keep a Hawaiian shirt in your car – you never know when it might come in handy, especially for free beer.

Before leaving on our merry way, we stopped off at the gift section and picked up a Rogue t-shirt. Charlie gave us a free beer glass – their brand is awesome and it’s a great glass. Had we not been pressed for time, as we still had a lot of chowder to sample, we would have made our way over to the actual Rogue Brewery just across the bridge from the pub. Rather, we decided to save that experience for another Hawaiian shirt clad day in the Pacific Northwest.

Rogue is not readily available in Kansas City, but if you look hard enough you will be rewarded with some of the best micro-brewed beer in the world. To get you started on your quest for Rogue, try Waldeaux Wine & Spirits in Kansas City, Missouri. Pat and Ryan Collins are so nice and helpful and will help you choose the best beers, just like Charlie did for us in Oregon. Good luck in your travels!

SIMPLY STOUT & HOW TO POUR THE PERFECT STOUT

If you are like me and you enjoy a pint of Irish black magic every once in a while, then you appreciate when a bartender has the skill and know-how to pour a pint properly. It’s the difference between leaving a bar with a smile on your face or a bad taste in your mouth. With St. Patrick’s Day coming up soon, it’s an essential skill to have.

When I was a young fella back in Ireland starting my first job at the Sail Inn in Killybegs, the first thing I learned when I went behind the bar was how to pour a pint of a stout correctly. If you pour a bad pint in Ireland, most of the time it will come back across the bar to you – and my old boss Vernon Graham didn’t appreciate you wasting his profit on a poor pint.

Stout runs on nitrogen rather than CO2; for some bartenders that causes a problem and they end up scooping out half the keg of stout rather than taking the time to learn how to pour it correctly.

On behalf of everyone who enjoys a well-poured pint, here is a little advice to the bartenders of our fine city – and to those who already follow these steps, thank you and give yourself a pat on the back.

If you still can’t get it right after these step-by-step directions and diagrams, then get rid of your keg and stock the bar with draught cans or bottles and let your guest do the rest. After all, we just want a good pint.

HOW TO POUR THE PERFECT STOUT

(1) Start with a clean, room-temperature glass – a frosted glass will screw it all up. Tilt the glass to a forty-five degree angle & pull the tap towards you, filling the glass about two-thirds full.

(2) Now leave the glass alone for 119 seconds – go make a martini or something for the hot blonde down the end of the bar.

(3) When the pint has had time to settle and a nice, thick, white head has formed, put the pint right up to the nozzle and push the tap away from you. Fill it all the way to the top and notice how the stout sits slightly above the rim of the glass; the head is now said to be “proud” of the pint.

BOTTLE SERVICE

Prestige, exclusivity, special treatment, money – all found in a bottle? You better believe it. It’s a trend that began in New York over five years ago (with Eurasian roots) and has steadily been gaining popularity in California, New York, Las Vegas, and for some time now, Kansas City.

The trend is called Bottle Service and what you get is a highly inflated bottle of liquor (most commonly vodka) with mixers to make your own drinks. Usually, this bottle price also covers VIP entry into a bar/lounge, private seating at a reserved table, and a certain amount of prestige as people look over and wonder why you’re getting all that extra special attention. Now they’ll know. You’re paying for it.

Bottle prices vary from $100-$400+ depending on the bar and of course, the liquor. The cost may sound prohibitive, but think of the nights you’ve shelled out $100 or more, especially you men who love to buy drinks for all the pretty ladies. Even if you can’t be VIP all the time, the beauty of bottle service is that you can act like it some of the time – special occasions, bachelor parties, birthdays, etc.

Mi Cocina on the Plaza has been offering bottle service for about a year and is among the most exclusive in Kansas City. They have a VIP room downstairs called “Apt.” that you may gain entry to by being a regular in their dining room, by being on “the list” or by receiving a special invitation for entry after dinner. (According to one of my friends, she just walked down there with no problem, sans invite, so maybe it’s not that exclusive.) There’s an additional room specifically reserved for bottle service also located on their lower level. Their bottles come with various mixers and includes entry for four people into “Apt.”

At Empire, bottles include mixers and a private seating area. What I like about this place is that your guest list is as complicated saying, “My friends are up there.” There’s no list, no attitude and it’s a great, big party. But there is a bouncer to maintain the appearance of keeping out the riff-raff.

Finally, newcomer Blonde provides, or rather demands, bottle service, at least on weekends. If you want a table, then you’re ordering a bottle and giving them a list of your closest friends. Don’t even think about doing that without a reservation because you’ll be waiting out in the cold. And don’t call them, they’ll call you. It’s that trendy and chi chi. Just kidding, they’ll call you back if you want to make a reservation, is what I meant to say.

I’ve heard that some dispicable men use bottle service as a way to get women to come to their table. The lure of a free cocktail or three, it seems, is irresistible to me...uh, I mean to those drunken floozies. It really does work wonders and guys, keep those free drinks coming.

One drawback to bottle service is whether you can (or want to) drink the entire bottle. Currently, we don’t know of any bars that offer locker service for unfinished bottles, or if that option is even legal (highly doubt it since I can’t even mention prices in print!) so your current options are either to drink it or lose it. You can’t take it with you. Somehow I don’t see that being a problem.

Another thing to consider is whether you really want to make your own drinks. I, for one, am a terrible bartender and like my drinks made for me. When you think of the convenience, however, you might change your mind. Instead of waving your money around (and not your crumpled up ones) trying to capture the bartender’s attention, you’ll have the luxury of having another drink immediately – without leaving or losing your comfy seat.

If you’ve got the money and a very reliable designated driver, then bottle service is a fun indulgence. If not, do what we do when the funds are low, drink beer and get a cab. That’s a whole different kind of bottle service.

If you decide to partake in this trend, please remember to drink responsibly. Don’t give yourself alcohol poisoning and please call a cab to get home safely. Yellow Cab - 816.471.5000.

BAR TRAVELER - Amsterdam

Pack your bags - we’re going to Amsterdam for a little drink,
a little smoke, and a whole lotta fun.

Amsterdam is known for many things–beautiful museums, an endless network of intersecting canals, the Red Light District. But invariably, one of the first things people think of when you say Amsterdam, is “coffee” shop. The coffeeshops in Amsterdam are primarily a place to buy legalized marijuana over the counter, but they can actually be much more than that. In many ways, these coffee shops aren’t so different from your favorite martini bar right here in Kansas City. Okay, so you can’t go out on a Saturday night with your friends and spark up a joint at the bar, much less order one right off the menu. Still, there are quite a few striking similarities.
One of the first things to keep in mind about bar hopping in Amsterdam is that if an establishment serves alcohol, they can’t serve marijuana. You can smoke pot anywhere, in any bar, but you can’t walk into a bar and buy a joint and also have the bartender pour you a nice single malt scotch. Most coffee shops specialize in exotic coffees, teas, and soy-ginseng energy drinks to enjoy with your favorite cannabis-based cigarette.

The most fascinating coffee shop I found while floating around Amsterdam was The Bulldog Lounge in the Leidesplein District. Upon entering, I was immediately impressed with the luxurious, elegant surroundings and classy atmosphere. The décor featured leather chairs with a deep mahogany trim and a long, mahogany bar with brass railings and copper lamps. The tables were equipped with brass ashtrays and coasters. To the right of the bar is a humidor that reaches to the ceiling filled with cigars and “specialty” cigars. Behind the bar were a few shelves proudly displaying a variety of smoking accessories like rare whiskies and cognacs.
The bartender was nicely dressed and immediately approached me handing me a menu.

Barely glancing at it, I said to him, “What do you recommend?”

He replied, “It depends on if you want hash or weed.”

He said this in a slightly smug tone, much in the same way I would respond to someone at my bar that simply asks for a “martini.” Martini? Well, would you like vodka or gin, dry or extra dry, up or on the rocks?

As much as I tried not to look like a tourist, it was now obvious that I was not experienced in coffee shop etiquette. Since I’m not quite the cannabis connoisseur and I wanted to keep my senses about me, I replied, “Weed.”

The bartender/smokeologist then said, “Do you want to get high or stoned?”
Now I was really confused. I’ve been high before, and I’ve been stoned before, but I’ve never taken the time to differentiate between the two. As he politely and patiently described the different nuances of marijuana intoxication, I couldn’t help but notice how much pride he took in knowing everything about his product. He was teaching me in the same way I would teach my customers about what makes bourbon, or the difference between cognac and brandy.

After getting comfortable and placing my order, I noticed a few seats down from me an older gentleman with a thick white beard and a denim jacket. He asked the bartender for something, who then quickly responded by weighing out a gram or two of fluffy green buds and presented him with a hand-blown water pipe that he sterilized and filled with water before packing the bowl for his customer. There was a great attention to detail in everything that the bartender did.

I also couldn’t help but notice the menu. It was broken into two categories: Weed and Hash. Everything was listed by name, White Widow, Northern Lights, Skunk No. 1, etc. Each item had a brief description of its flavors and type of high, like whether it was a “heady high” or a “body high” as well as the THC level printed out to the side much like an alcohol content or “proof.”

The prices were reasonable, about 7 or 8 euros per gram, which at the time was around $10. The tourist trap is a pre-rolled pot and tobacco blended cigarette that every place sells for about 5 euros. They are pre-packaged in plastic or cellophane containers and manage to give you a brief high with a long, lingering headache. Or maybe that was just my own inexperience, considering that I don’t typically smoke tobacco or pot.

After an indeterminate but very enjoyable amount of time spent at The Bulldog Lounge, I left with a doggie bag in my pocket and headed down the road to Café Alto, a smoky nightclub with great live jazz and an impressive selection of Dutch beer and single-malt scotch. I stumbled out of Café Alto around sunrise and spent the following day lounging in the back of a canal boat, writing down my memories of the previous night, in between visits to Amsterdam’s most beautiful museums.

INTERROGATION with Frondizi's Teri Lemos

That hair, that laugh, and all that flair. Teri Lemos, the day bartender at Frondizi’s has the “it” factor that is essential to any drink slinger. We met when I worked next door at THE SALON and I’ve been madly in love ever since. She runs this joint - answering phones, making drinks, serving food, and greeting everyone with her mega-watt smile and endless enthusiasm. During her interview, we got comments from all sides of the bar so this issue’s interrogation is going to be a little different.

THE FACTS ON MS. TERI:

1. She’s been in the business since she was 16, from busser to bartender, and it’s no wonder that she’s so freakin’ good at this.

2. She mostly drinks wine, but “those Bloody Mary’s are darned good.” Yes, they are, Teri and yes, she said darned.

3. She doesn’t drink tequila....anymore.

4. Teri resoundingly responded with a “Hell, no!” when asked if she ever thought of opening her own bar. “I’d rather work and just go home. If I had my own stud parlor, that’d be a different story.”

5. The secret to her success is her big heart. She cares about people and it shows. “I’m always taking care of my customers the way I want to be treated.” We asked her regulars, Roland and Bill, what made Teri so good. They cheekily answered, “She doesn’t charge us!”

6. She’s got flair and we’re not talking about flipping bottles - this stylish bartender has pins and decorations for every single holiday. Gina her manager said, “She’s the dress up bartender, she’s very extravagant!” Extravagant and exceptional.

Teri’s Work Schedule: Frondizi’s Ristorante >> M-F 11 am - 5 pm,
no nights and weekends, she’s paid her dues.

WELCOME

Thank you for picking up Drink: Your Guide to the Kansas City Bar Scene. You are now armed with the ultimate drinking passport: flick through these pages and you’ll find everything from dive bars to wine bars, gay bars to sports bars, or sports bars that are gay bars!

This little book has been kicking around the city for just over a year now and we’ve had a lot of fun doing the kicking. From the response we get, it sounds like the good people of this city like having it around too.

Kansas City is very much embryonic in its bar scene growth: we’ve got the pulse and faint heart beat, but the limbs are not quite developed and we are a long way from being a fully- grown entertainment destination. But that’s what is exciting about our baby here. There is always some new place springing up as another old favorite dies: like going to the christening of Blonde and the eminent funeral of Westport Flea Market. We may sadly miss one and detest the other depending on our taste, but we have to realize that’s the price of progress: Darwin and his proverbial “Survival of the Fittest,” at least if you are in Missouri, because it’s not on the curriculum across the State Line.

We’d like to give a great big thank you to all our sponsors, especially J.P. Gilmore with Charbay and Premier Cru who helped us throw a fantastic Masquerade Ball in the Red Room at Re:Verse on the Plaza.

And now for our mantra: This is a guide for the visitor and the local; it’s your barstool read, it’s your hotel roommate, it’s your pocket-sized drinking buddy. Enjoy the night, keep your guide and remember to Pick Me Up and Take Me Home!
